Vodafone eyes 3G TV phone for Japan

Vodafone's Japanese operation yesterday unveiled its latest TV phone, a Sharp-made W-CDMA 3G handset with a swivelling 400 x 240, 262,144-colour Aquos-class widescreen display and the ability to tune into earthbound digital broadcasts.

The Vodafone 905SH works with Japan's One Seg digital TV service. The handset's a clamshell unit, and once opened, its 2.6in display can be turned through 90 degrees for TV viewing. There's a telescopic aerial at the back of the phone for picking up programming.

The cellco said the 905SH's 16:9 aspect ratio display is based on the same technology Sharp builds into its Aquos line of LCD TVs - there are six colour filters, for example, to ensure "unrivaled colour purity", it claimed.

The 143g 905SH has a two megapixel main camera and a smaller, 110,000-pixel job for video calls. There's a MiniSD card slot for memory expansion. Vodafone claimed the phone's battery provides four hours' viewing time, 180 mins' talk time and will run for 360 hours on stand-by.

Vodafone said it will offer the handset in June, "a time scheduled for international football matches" apparently. What could it mean...? ®
