I don’t think there is an "HDR10". There is an HDR-SR10 (40GB HDD Camcorder) which is selling under $700.00 online. The first link below is to the Abe’s of Maine page. They have it for $699.95 with free shipping and a free bag. There are a few places that have it for less but none that I am familiar with. The second link below is to the Sony product page. The digitalcamera-hq.com link (3rd below) has reviews and links to reviews at other sites. The SR10 is the smallest (and cheapest) of the HDR-SR line. Not a bad little camera for the price but it doesn’t have the bells and whistles of the more expensive models.

Samsung Cellular Phone M620 Upstage - The Music Lovers Cell Phone

When I first saw the Samsung Cellular Phone M620 Upstage I was pretty excited. A double-sided cell phone, on one side the phone itself, including a 1.3 megapixel camera, and on the other a music player with its own screen display and controls! What more could a gadget-loving girl ask for?

The handset is black, slim and fits in your purse neatly. At just under half an inch in depth and four inches in height, space is not an issue and it only weighs 2.5 ounces.

On the phone side of the M620 I found your average Samsung style keypad and controls. There's a toggle control, OK button and separate camera button as well as the standard talk and end keys. The compromise, however, is the very small screen size. It's just big enough to display four icons side by side, and measures only 1.4 inches diagonally, as a result the message text and caller numbers show up very small. The 64k-color TFT screen is bright enough though, and the backlight on the keypad is a nice feature.

All the essentials are there - SMS, Multimedia Messaging, vibrating mode, caller ID - as well as added benefits such as MMS, Bluetooth access and voice commands. The camera is of decent quality for a phone, taking pictures is easy and it has a zoom option. It also acts as a camcorder so that you can record video clips with sound.

On the other side - the flip side - we have the music player. For me, this is the main attraction if you can get over the limitations of the phone set-up. Pressing the flip button on the side of the handset switches you over to the music player - or back again. It takes a bit of getting used to though, and can be cumbersome to keep flipping back and forth.

The best bit about the Samsung Cellular Phone Upstage M620 is most definitely the music player. I love the touchpad screen, and on the music side the screen is much bigger, with a bright TFT display. The interface takes a bit of practice to scroll through the icons, but after a couple of hours of tapping and sliding, I was getting the hang of it.

Adding MP3 tracks to the phone's media was fairly simple using a micro SD card, and you can use the Sprint Music Manager to sync your music from your PC. Listening to music through a Bluetooth stereo headset is essential if you want good sound quality, as the Upstage only has a single speaker - and it's on the phone side!

Another point I need to mention here is the battery situation. The internal battery is not removable, and only gives a couple of hours talk time. The good news is that you also get an external battery attached to the M620's trendy wallet. This doubles as a protective case for your phone whilst at the same time the external battery is plugged in. Ideal!

Verdict: Love the slim, lightweight design of this fab little handset, and the innovative feature of the two-sided interface set-up. The size of the phone side display is a let down, with only three lines of text at a time but I'll live with it. I am not so keen on all the flipping. Although it becomes less of a chore after a while, the dual function of this Samsung M620 could be improved. Whatever else, your friends will be impressed when you whip this little gadget out of your pocket

Just remember this, laptops are different than desktops. For most people they have been told for years whenever you are buying a new computer, get the best so it is “future proof”. I don’t believe this is the case and so differ from most Toshiba laptop reviews. It is not about how good it is on paper, it is what it does for you.

As most people know, Toshiba has been making quality notebooks/ laptops for many years and this will continue, but rest assured that if you are buying one now, it will last you quite a few years. Elektrobit released its dual-mode satellite terrestrial HSPA handset at CTIA Wireless 2008, and this modern marvel has stirred quite a fair bit of interest. It touts itself to be the "first fully IP-based Quad-band GSM-satellite phone" which features a touch screen display, a full QWERTY keyboard, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, USB, and GPS navigation, all powered by the Elektrobit unveils HSPA handset Windows 6.1 mobile operating system. It will come in a PDA form factor, where users in the US will be able to seamlessly connect via both the satellite and terrestrial components of the TerreStar network. That is currently the sole carrier at this stage, so who knows whether there will be others in the future? Both Elektrobit and TerreStar have come together to deliver a new generation of mobile reference designs that will bring together the first quad-band GSM and tri-band WCDMA/HSPA smartphone with integrated all-IP satellite-terrestrial voice and data capabilities in the world. Office Communications Server 2007 Public Beta Launches

Microsoft would launch the public beta of Office Communications Server 2007 later this month. Well, Microsoft gave me a heads up on the launching of their public beta of Office Communications Server 2007 which is available later today. The Public Beta code for Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 + Communicator 2007 (client) will be available for download as of 10AM PDT (1PM EDT). Virtual PC images plus video demos will be available following week, which will allow IT staff to more easily trial OCS 2007 as a "virtual" turnkey solution. I plan on testing OCS 2007 on Windows 2003 R2 x64 Enterprise Edition very soon, so keep your eye out for that. For now, let me give you my thoughts on what I know so far about OCS 2007, including some interesting insights from my meeting with Microsoft two weeks ago in NYC. First, Microsoft is getting into the IP phone business - look out Cisco! Technically, Microsoft will be licensing the Office Communicator client to run directly on VoIP phone hardware, such as this unannounced IP phone below: (click for full high-res version where you can see how similar the functionality on LCD GUI is to the Microsoft Office Communicator 2007.)

Similar to the Microsoft Office Communicator client, the phone features colored presence indicators that let you know the status of your coworkers, friends, etc. I asked Microsoft who made this IP phone but they said it was still unannounced, but would be released sometime this year. There is another phone that integrates with Microsoft OCS from Polycom, as seen to the right. I'm not sure the model of this new Polycom phone, but it too should be out sometime this year. Looking at these two "presence-capable" IP phones, it got me thinking - why would anyone buy a phone that doesn't have presence? I know I am more productive when I can IM a coworker and I know I can receive an instant response, so why shouldn't this be extended to voice? Imagine you are a sales rep about to close a major deal but you need to get a manager's approval for a 15% discount. You put the customer on hold and try and conference in your manager, but he's not there. You then try another manager, and she isn't at her desk either. Assuming you haven't hung up on the customer with all these conference attempts, these communication attempts are not only time-consuming, but it gives a bad impression of your organization. If the sales rep in this scenario could see the presence of all the managers, he could have quickly conferenced in an available manager. Folks, this kind of "presence-capable" phone is the future. Cisco, Avaya, Nortel, and all the others will have to provide this functionality or lose business to those that do. Watch for tons of presence-capable IP phones in the next 18 months - that's my prediction.

Microsoft's Secret Codec Weapon?
One fact that hasn't gotten any attention from the mainstream media (& tech media) coverage of OCS 2007 is the VoIP and video codec Microsoft is using. During my conversation with Microsoft they kept talking about how Office Communicator's VoIP works well not only in broadband environments, but also in limited bandwidth narrowband environments, i.e. dial-up -- and even on Windows Mobile 5 devices. They stressed how their codec works well even with high packet loss due to Forward Error Correction (FEC) and other algorithms. I inquired whose codec they were using and they said that they developed it themselves. This was a bit of a surprise since there are at least two well-known adaptive VoIP codecs available, including Spirit DSP, and Global IP Sound (GIPS), which is used by Skype, Google Talk, and a plethora of other softphones. When I asked if Microsoft considered using/licensing the GIPS codec, Microsoft stated that they were in talks with Global IP Sound, but chose to go their own way, to avoid the licensing costs, but more importantly Microsoft stated that their own performance benchmarks showed their codec performed better. Relatedly, Psytechnics said Microsoft's codec performed better than Cisco 7961 IP Phones. Wow, score one for software-based digital signal processing (Microsoft) over a hardware DSP (Cisco). I meant to ask Microsoft is they planned on offering their software codec for license, which would compete with Spirit DSP and GIPS, but forgot. However, just from various conversations, it didn't seem like that was their goal. But if Microsoft did license their technology or worse - give it away for free, then Spirit DSP and GIPS could be in trouble.

I will have much more on Microsoft OCS 2007 once I get a chance to install and test it. In the meantime, here are a couple of screenshots just to "wet your whistle" until I fully test it. The first screenshot is from Outlook 2007 - notice how their are colored presence indicators next to each name in the To: and Cc: lines so you can easily figure out if someone is available, and then initiate a call, IM, video session from within an email message. The 2nd screenshot is the Office Communicator client initiating a video call.

Sony Ericsson K810i Phone

he Sony Ericsson K810i camera phone has kept some similarities to its original the K800i in terms of overall looks and features. One major difference to the k800i though, is the keypad. The phone now has 4mm wide disc shaped buttons, which were easy to use, however some people might find it hard to adapt to due to their small size. The phone has a rubbery soft feel on the back, and the front is shiny. In between each line of vertical buttons there is a large space. This phone is slimmer and lighter than its original weighting at just 103 grams.

Camera Test

The cyber-shot camera is excellent. It has a 16X digital zoom, and has loads of features that allow you to take photos with different themes, effects, and background frames. The quality of the photos is very good, and there are several different capture modes, including sports, which allow brilliant quality photos for fast moving objects, and beach/snow mode is for when the surroundings are very bright. There is also a new feature called “photofix” where a picture can be adjusted after it’s been taken to give it a professional look.

The camera also has four different picture sizes to choose from. The only setback from the camera is the shutter speed in which the photo is taken, as it is quite slow. However the camera does have a burst mode called ‘Bestpics’, and this allows 9 pictures to be automatically taken one after the other straight away.

One of the things I found annoying was when looking through all the pictures in the photo album. When a picture is chosen, it initially looks blurred and distorted. After about a second the picture clears up and looks normal, but sometimes it can take longer than a second. This can be irritating when trying to have a quick browse through photos.

The camera is very easy to use on this mobile phone due to its shortcuts. As when the camera function is on, the buttons on the left hand side of the keypad give you direct access to all of the camera and video settings. These buttons have icons which are lit up in blue to show you what they are for. Also at the top of the screen there are two photo album shortcut buttons, one takes you to the camera album and the other takes you to the last picture taken with the camera.

The video camera is just of an average standard, as when used on the automatic mode the picture can look quite fuzzy and pixelated at times. This is the same when using 3G video call.

Sony Ericsson has announced a few more additions to their fantastic Cyber-shot handset range. The first handset that was announced was the Sony Ericsson C702 Cyber-shot. The C702 is packed with the very latest camera phone technology and is thought to produce brilliant picture quality with its 3.15 megapixel optics. TheSony Ericsson C702 is a Mobile Broadband handsets with its HSDPA data speeds. Sony Ericsson has unveiled a few new mobile phones at the CES 2008 and it is this one called the Sony Ericsson W760 which is also known as the SE Global Walkman that is undoubtedly the best of the bunch.

We gave you an insight to theSony Ericsson W760 and the Sony Ericsson Z555 which are pretty decent looking phones, but it is the W760 that we feel will win the hearts of all you mobile phone lovers.

As said the W760 is nicknamed the “Global Walkman” and the reason behind this name is because it features quad-band GSM and tri-band UMTS network support (Hell yeah, both), which means you can just about use it anywhere in the world.

Other main features that stands out has to be the support HSDPA for faster data transfers and the 3.2 megapixel camera with built-in accelerometer allowing screen auto-rotation and Shake control.

The display is 2.2 inches with QVGA resolution and 262K colors, plus this particular handset will have 40 MB of built in memory and Memory Stick Micro card slot for expansion, there will be apparently a 1GB card included in the package deal when you buy.

Another cool feature on the Sony Ericsson W760 has to be the built in GPS with Wayfinder Navigator application, sadly though you will need to have a paid subscription for the program to work.

Sony Ericsson W350i

The design:
Sony Ericsson W350i measures 104 x 43 x 10.5 mm and weighs 80 grams. The phone comes in a few different color schemes, but the orange with black one seems the most appealing. As I mentioned before the W350i is an old-fashioned phone with a flip. On the flip there are several buttons responsible for navigating the Walkman 2.0 music player. The buttons do the work very well and add to the phones neat looks, but the flip itself seems a bit too delicate. Below it you will find the keypad with a D-pad. All the buttons there are comfortable and responsive with rectangular design. On the left side of the phone is the charging port and the Walkman dedicated key, whereas on the right is the volume rocker. At the back of the phone you will find the 1.3 megapixel fixed-focus camera lens.

Performance:
W350i is loud and the reception is very good so making phone call with it is a pleasure. Unfortunately, because of the smallish screen the W350i is not really suitable for browsing the Internet. You can do it, of course, but the websites that are not designed for mobile devices will not look too good. Sony Ericsson W350i uses the NetFront web browser which compresses the pages to fit the screen bit it cannot work wonders. The 1.3 megapixel
fixed-focus digital camera takes photos in small resolution, but of surprisingly good quality. The photos are well saturated with good white balance and generally look very good. The Walkman 2.0 music player also does its job very well, but the headphones included in the box are of poor quality. It’s good that in the box you also get an adapter with a microphone thanks to which practically any headphones may work as a handsfree. The music control on the flip are OK and the only thing about the music player that is weak is the low bass level.

Menus / use:
Sony Ericsson W350i has the good old Sony Ericsson interface available, however, it is a slightlycut-down version, as the phone would not make use of some of the tabs anyway. So the interface is very usr-friendly, uncomplicated and it comes with five different themes. Customization options are also very good, as is the call log and phonebook. The phonebook can store up to 1000 contacts with up to 7 phone numbers for each contact and a few other fields such as: address, website, birthdate and some others. All in all, the Sony Ericsson W350i is a good phone for people who don’t feel the need to show off and use a cell phone to make calls and from time to time for some other purposes.

Sony Ericsson sees an opening in the cellphone market, pushing hard on its Walkman phones with the W300i, a quad-band EDGE cellphone with dedicated music buttons and the ability to play 30 hours of music on a single charge. It’s compatible with Memory Stick Micro cards, and has a still camera onboard that’s unfortunately just 640x480. The 3.2-ounce phone is nice and compact at 3.5 x 1.9 x 0.9 inches and will be available in black or white in Q2.

he Sony Ericsson W660i is a 3G device with a tactile finish and will be available in Record Black and Rose Red.

The W660 has a finish that stands out among its peers. Although the W660 places the emphasis firmly on design, it is also a full member of our Walkman phone family, able to store several hundred full-length songs. That’s important because our research indicates users are listening to more music than ever before - an average of 4.4 hours a day, according to the latest Sony Ericsson Music Monitor.

The W660 features the latest TrackID software which allows users identify tracks by recording a piece of music using the microphone or by tagging a clip from your music library or FM Radio. Nokia 5700

For those of you not obsessed with anorexic phones, Nokia thinks it has just the answer with the musically inclined 5700 XpressMusic and its twisty bottom.

This is the successor to the old 3250, which also had the rotating rear, but comes with a few more tweaks and a cooler look. The design is a little more curvy and there’s a proper 3.5mm headphone jack. It’s 3G with quad-band GSM and Bluetooth and, I do like that widescreen display which has a resolution of 240x320 for viewing videos and photos. The camera stays the same at 2MP but the whole thing is 15g lighter than the 3250.

The twisting base offer access to the four key functions: music player, camera, video call and smartphone. Memory can be expanded up to 2GB using microSD cards. The downside seems to be that there’s no mention of an FM radio and internal memory is a measly 35Mb.

The Nokia N93i is available in black and silver. Nokia delivered the silver colored one at my doorstep and I must admit I am quite charmed by its appearance. It's shiny and striking and not only because of the large size of the Nokia N93i. The back has been made of a brown purplish metallic colored plastic that feels a tad feeble in some ways. To finish off the design completely it would have been better to have used a much more firm cover. On top of the camera we find a huge lump. It contains the digital camera that I will comment on further down in this review. Furthermore some two covers are found hiding the memory card and the connection for the computer and TV out.

Nokia N93i - Menu

Compared with the Nokia N93 in my opinion the menu has become a lot clearer. The graphic design of the menu items has improved tremendously and thanks to the support in the form of short messages you are able to easily and quickly find all functions. Some basic functions are already visible on the start screen, so fast navigation is ensured. You can quickly open the phone book, make and view text messages, surf the Internet, providing you have connection, view photos, listen to music, keep the calendar up-to-date and adjust your WLAN settings. All of this without having to dive into the menu which makes it quick and easy. The multimedia button brings you rapidly to the multi-media part of the telephone where you can choose from various multi-media applications just by pressing the button once.

Nokia 5000, 2680 slide 7070 Prism and 1680 classic 4 new Economy handsets

Nokia released 4 new economy handsets at the “Growing Together 2008″ conference held in Johannesburg.

The four new handsets include: the Nokia 5000 with a 1.3 mega pixels camera, which is claimed to be Nokia’s first camera phone at this price point (between Rs 3000 – Rs 5500); Nokia 2680 Slide; Nokia 7070 Prism; and Nokia 1680 Classic.

Nokia 5000

The handset has a 1.3 mega pixels camera, high-resolution QVGA display, and FM radio with recording functionality and MP3 ring tones.

The handset also supports email and other benefits including Nokia Xpress Audio Messaging, Bluetooth, and GPRS connectivity.

Expected price: Rs 5500.

Nokia 2680

A slim slider camera phone, Nokia 2680 is an entry level handset that has a FM radio with recording capability and MP3 ring tones and an expanded phone book among others.

Expected to be priced at approximately Rs 4700, this handset will be available from October 2008.

Nokia 7070 Prism

A slider version of the candy bar Prism, 7070 is a low-priced handset that features a new folding design with the geometric patterns and external light effects that are the trademark of the series.

The new Prism offers personalized content including themes and wallpapers, and MP3-grade ring tones. It has a voice recorder and hands-free speaker.

The handset is expected to be priced at approximately Rs 3500.

Nokia 1680 Classic

This handset is touted as Nokia’s most affordable camera phone till date. It features video recording and one-touch access for photos and videos.

It is a basic phone with the added benefit of a basic digital VGA camera.

Expected to be priced at Euro 50, or Rs 3500 approximately, this handset will be available across markets by July-August 2008.

Firstly the Vuitton style phone the Nokia 7200. It features an integrated camera, colour screen, presence-enhanced Chat function, MMS functionality and an FM radio. It also has a 65K colour display, video camera and xHTML browser. Shipments in Europe begin during the first half of 2004. Looks like a bit of a girl phone to us, but it is certainly the best-looking handset Nokia has produced in ages. Comes with a matching pouch and suits you sir!

Nokia 7700

It appears that one of the handsets, the 7700, will include a TV tuner of sorts. It will also support the Nokia Streamer SU-6 accessory, the first mobile IP Datacast receiver designed to demonstrate the mobile phone television experience using the DVB-H network. The Nokia Streamer can be attached to the Nokia 7700 like a battery pack, and will be used in pilot projects to showcase the future of digital broadcasting on mobile devices. So no EastEnders just yet. It'll be interesting to see if TV companies are interestd in experiemting with it. It would certainly be good for major sporting events like the Euro 2004. Wonder how long the batery lasts though when streaming TV? That model also has video and camera options, full HTML Internet access, a wide touch screen and a built-in FM radio. It goes on sale in Europe in Q2 2004.

Nokia N810

MLI was able to get a bit of hands on time with the Nokia N810 WiMAX edition at CTIA Wireless in Las Vegas this week. The N810 WiMAX edition is essentially the same hardware as the standard N810 but with the added WiMAX capability. The WiMAX differentiates itself visually with a darker color scheme. It also runs a new version of the Internet Tablet OS, which will also be made available to the N800 and N810 later this year.

Nokia 6555

Nokia announced today that a new clamshell phone called the 6555 is forthcoming.Â The “sensuous” phone with a smooth-back fold design features WDCMA and quad band connectivity.Â The camera features a 6x zoom (digital we assume) while the internal display is 240×320 and displays 16 million colors.

But perhaps the most intriguing (wasteful?) feature is an analog clock on the front panel, just under the camera lens.Â The phone will hit sometime next month at an expected price of 200 euros.Â That effectively rules out advanced features like Symbian and Wi-Fi. Meh.

Nokia N96

Nokia has announced Nokia N96 in the 2008 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, in Spain, this is supposed to be the most feature packed smartphone made till date.

Nokia N96 has the the dual-sliding function like N95 it is also sporting a pair of gaming keys to the multimedia cluster on extra slide panel that can be used for N-Gage games. It has a 5 megapixel camera with auto-focus and Carl Zeiss lenses accentuated by a dual LED flash that can also function as a video recording light.

Nokia N96 smartphone is based on the Symbian S60 3rd Edition operation system, with Feature Pack 2, this also has a DVB-H digital TV receiver and innovative kickstand for watching video on the handset’s beautiful 2.8″ QVGA display.

There are various connection options including quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900MHz) and dual-band WCDMA (900/2100MHz). It also has WiFi support for HSDPA for high speed data connections. It has 16GB of internal flash memory and a microSD memory card slot with support for cards up to 16GB mean you’ll never run out of space for photos, music, and games.

One of the another enchanting feature about Nokia N96 is its built-in GPS receiver that works with the new Nokia Maps 2.0, which come preloaded on the N96.

The Nokia’s updated Share Online function enables the N96 to automatically geo tag your photos and upload them to Flickr.

The N96 makes it easy to share your media with friends via a TV-Out cable and UPnP support. This slider smartphone is expected to start shipping in Q3 2008 with pricing set approximately at USD 800.

Update: The price of Nokia N96 in India is in the range ofÂ Rupees 32,000 to 34,000. It varies from retailer to retailer in this range.

Microsoft in Talks with Nokia about Windows Mobile Devices

ITwire reports that Microsoft’s mobile communications business international marketing director John Starkweather said that there were ongoing discussions between Microsoft and Nokia but did not announced or hint at any products.

Of course, I’m sure that Microsoft has been talking to Nokia about this before. In fact last year, there was a rumor on that subject. However, that might be a long way from having a Windows Mobile powered Nokia device.

To be fair, Nokia is doing OK, it is still the #1 handset maker in the world, but their recent gains have mostly been in the emerging countries, where the margins are low. To capture the lucrative smartphone market should they go with Symbian, Linux, Windows Mobile, or try everything and see what works? I think that Nokia can try everything, but with Windows Mobile, it will have a harder time differentiating itself from Samsung or HTC, the current top Windows phones makers.

Nokia 1209

Nokia has recently announced the launch of two handsets aimed at consumers in emerging markets. One of them is Nokia 1209, one of the cheapest propositions on market today.

Very similar to it’s predecessor, Nokia 1208, this unit presents maximum functionality for less bucks. But even for $50 it has color display and polyphonic ringtones. But the main feature is the multiuser address book. Though this mobile is aimed for countries where people can’t afford buying mobiles for every person in the family, Nokia’s developers made address book with multiuser access. That means that everyone in the family can use the unit and have it’s own password protected list of numbers. Yes, this definitely make sense for target countries - India, China, Brazil, Pakistan, Vietnam, Russia and Egypt.

The main idea of this device сan be described by one sentence from official press release - “Designed for first time buyers, the Nokia 1209 incorporates Nokia’s intuitive user interface, dust resistance, and offers up to 80 languages. The Nokia 1209 also has a one-piece key mat for durability and reliability.”

Nokia 1209 will appear in stores this fall.

Nokia Morph phone concept

All these initiatives sum-up into not a much more then a PR vaporware, but the Greenpeace report was also mainly a PR issue for Nokia. So let the Finnish “green” PR offensive continue. We are getting some pretty nice pictures of possible future phone designs, at least.

That a mobile phone must be many things to many people prevents there being a single perfect mobile. New HP laptop releases rumored, Mini 1000 Mi included
